Firefighters from both Carlisle fire stations urgently crossed to the city to a blaze next to a slurry lagoon.
Carlisle West and Carlisle East Fire Station were called at 11.30am to a barn fire close to Talkin, Brampton.
When the crews arrived they found a tractor alight.
A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue said: "On arrival, we found a tractor well alight next to a slurry lagoon. "The fire was extinguished using a hose reel jet by firefighters in breathing apparatus.
"It took both appliance tanks to apply enough cooling water to knock the fire down.
"Water supplies are few and far between outside towns and cities so we train in water application techniques to minimise the use and maximise results at incidents like this."
The crews were at the scene for over an hour.
