Fire crews were called to reports of a wagon alight at a service station near Carlisle.
Two appliances from Carlisle east fire station responded to the Golden Fleece Services, just off junction 42 of the M6, at about 6.15pm yesterday.
A spokesman said: "On arrival, it was discovered that the fire involved a flat bed lorry carrying a JCB loader.
"Crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel, a dry powder extinguisher, and one set of breathing apparatus."
