FIRE crews were called out to an explosion on a Carlisle street.
After arriving at Petteril Bank Road, at around 11am today [Sunday], firefighters from the Carlisle East and Carlisle West fire stations found evidence of a powerful blast - strong enough to have lifted pavement slabs and scattered debris.
The explosion was just yards away from houses.
It was caused by an underground electric cable, according to a Facebook post from Carlisle East Fire Station.
Engineers from Electricity North West were sent to the scene and after investigating confirmed that underground cables were the cause.
"We left the incident in the hands of their engineers," said a spokesman for Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service.
Nobody was hurt.
Shortly after the drama, several residents in the area reported experiencing power cuts.
Police were also at the scene.
