A major road is closed after a vehicle fire.
The A69 towards Newcastle is closed in both directions today (May 20) due to a vehicle fire at Heddon on the Wall (between the A6085 and B6528)
There are reports of slow traffic due to a lorry fire between A6085 Ponteland Road (Throckley Interchange, Throckley) and B6528 (Oatens Bank junction, Horsley).
A lorry carrying hay bales is on fire, and the road has been closed since around 9:00 am.
Road users are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs if heading eastbound, and the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs if heading westbound.
A Northumbria police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 8:15 am today (Friday) we received a report that a lorry carrying hay bales was on fire on the A69 near Heddon-on-the-Wall.
“Emergency services are at the scene.
"The road has been fully closed as fire crews tackle the blaze and diversions are currently in place.
“Motorists are advised there will be increased congestion in the area.”
