A leading Carlisle estate said that the city is ‘buoyant’ and represents ‘exceptional value for money’ for prospective house buyers.

Carlisle was named as the 4th cheapest city for first time house buyers by the Daily Telegraph this week and Paul Doyle, Carlisle branch manager for H&H Land and Estates, said he believes that the city will ‘continue to grow and prosper.

“In terms of property, Post Covid we have seen significant price rises across the city, and I believe that Carlisle will continue to grow and prosper,” said Paul.

“So, for anyone wondering where to establish their roots and purchase a home this buoyant city offers exceptional value for money, which means lower mortgage payments.

Housing markets have begun to recover since the mini budget in September 2022 which saw interest rates shoot up to their highest levels in a decade.

According to the Telegraph, the average cost for a first-time buyer to purchase a house was £111,268 and the average monthly mortgage is £413.

Carlisle is also the cheapest city to rent with the average rental cost coming in at £607 per month.

The Telegraph raised eyebrows across the city last week when it named Carlisle as the worst city in the UK.

According to the Telegraph, Carlisle was found to be lagging behind in the number of Michelin starred restaurants as well as highly rated pubs, Airbnb rooms as well as swanky hotels, museums as well as crime.

They added the Hadrian’s Wall path is ‘the least interesting section and a bit of a non-event’.

But H&H Carlisle branch manager, Paul Doyle disagreed with the Telegraph.

“Carlisle is a great city with a beautiful cathedral a beautiful castle and a fantastic night life, and the Lake District, along with the Solway Coast and North Pennines all areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty are on the city’s doorstep,” said Paul.

“The city is evolving, hundreds of new houses are being built, and work has started on the Southern Relief Road, which will reduce city traffic and improve motorway access.

“Carlisle has great connectivity, and the main west coast train line gives very easy access to Glasgow Edinburgh Manchester and London.”

Progress continues to be made on the southern link road and the city centre is set to be transformed by the completion of major projects on English Street and Devonshire Street as well as the improvements to the train station.
