HUNDREDS of children have had to be found a new way of getting to school after a bus operator suddenly pulled out.

Carlisle-based Stacey’s Coaches held a number of school transport contracts within north Cumbria until it unexpectedly withdrew from them – as of today.

The move has sparked rumours about the company’s future, but no-one from Stacey’s Coaches would comment at the time of going to press.

Cumbria County Council has stepped in and managed to find alternative bus companies to take over the existing routes, ensuring every child manages to get to school on Monday.

A spokesman for the authority said: “Stacey’s Coaches gave notice they would be withdrawing from contracts to provide transport in the Carlisle and surrounding areas.

"Following a tendering process, the council has appointed other transport providers who will be taking over these contracts from Monday.”

Last March, Stacey’s Coaches celebrated 20 years in business but shortly after director Barrie Barnes died at the age of 46 following a battle with cancer.
