Owners of Hotpoint fridge freezers have been urged to check to see if theirs is the same model as that which sparked the Grenfell Tower blaze in London.

Following a statement from the Metropolitan Police that a Hotpoint FF175BP fridge freezer has been identified as the initial source of the fire, Hotpoint has issued a product notice.

Owners of a Hotpoint fridge freezer model FF175BP (White) or FF175BG (Graphite) should call the manufacturer's freephone hotline on 0800 316 3826 to register their details for further information.

These models were discontinued in 2009, but 64,000 were sold between March 2006 and July 2009. It is not known how many are still in use.

The government has ordered an immediate examination of the two fridge freezer models by technical experts.

If you’re unsure if you own an affected model, check inside your fridge for the model number. Most will be on a bar code on a sticker behind the salad container.

If you do think you may have an affected model contact the manufacturer or visit their website and complete an online form.

Customer service agents will register your appliance and give you advice.

Greg Clark, Secretary of State for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, said: "The safety of consumers is paramount. The device is being subject to immediate and rigorous testing to establish the cause of the fire.

"I have made clear to the company that I will expect them to replace any item without delay if it is established that there is a risk in using them."
