CUMBRIA will get another £82 million to help repair its flood-damaged roads.

An announcement today sees the Department for Transport pledge an additional £82.6m to fund essential repairs to infrastructure damaged by Storms Desmond and Eva.

Councillor Stewart Young, leader of Cumbria County Council, said: "This really is great news and this money will go a very long way to helping Cumbria rebuild its infrastructure following the floods.

"This money, together with the £39m that Government have already allocated us, now gives Cumbria a total of just under £122m and we will use this money to rebuild our county making it stronger and more resilient for the future."

Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said: "Keeping Cumbria moving is essential to local businesses in the area; a key part of doing this is being able to fund repairs to local transport infrastructure and provide expertise on the ground to repair roads like the A591.

"Helping communities recover from the devastating winter storms has been a Government priority and I’m delighted the Chancellor was able to announce this additional package of support for Cumbria in his Budget."
