A teenage girl is in a critical condition following a two-vehicle crash on the A596 at Thursby on Saturday night.
A 17-year-old girl from Carlisle is in a critical condition in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, a Cumbria police spokeswoman confirmed today.
She said: "Two cars were involved, a BMW and a Peugeot.
"The front seat passenger of the BMW was taken to hospital and is in a stable condition. However the front seat passenger of the Peugeot, a 17-year-old female from Carlisle, remains in a critical condition in the RVI."
A section of the road between Pow junction and the roundabout was closed following the incident, with police officers on hand to direct traffic.
Firefighters from both Wigton and Aspatria were also called to the scene at approximately 7.25pm.
Nobody had to be cut free from either vehicle and they helped administer first aid and made the scene safe.
