FIREFIGHTERS were at the scene of a large barn fire for more than nine hours.
Seven crews from across north Cumbria were called out to deal with the blaze at Waverton at about 5.40am today.
The barn, which contained large amounts of straw and silage, was well alight when the first crews from Wigton and Aspatria arrived.
They were joined by appliances from Carlisle east and west fire stations, Maryport and two from Penrith.
Two hose reel jets and an aerial ladder platform were needed to bring the blaze under control by 7.50am.
Firefighters worked throughout the day to scale down the operation. At about 12.20pm they removed straw from the building and spent time damping down the area.
They were still on scene at 2.30pm.
