Scotby hammer thrower Nick Miller's plans ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Doha have suffered a setback due to inadequate hammer facilities.

Miller, who won the gold medal in the hammer at the Commonwealth Games last year, had planned to be at the base but has, instead, gone to Turkey to finalise his preparations, according to a national newspaper report today.

With the championships starting a week tomorrow, it calls into question the planning and site visits by UK Athletics (UKA).

A UKA statement to the Daily Mail read: "It's completely normal ahead of a major championships for athletes of different disciplines to be based at differing training venues.

"While the majority of team athletics are based in Dubai, there is also a significant number preparing at altitude.

"We were fully aware of the facilities available at Dubai and have supported Nick and his coach Tore [Gustafsson] to ensure they were located at a superior throws facility, which will provide exactly what they need to best prepare to compete successfully in Doha."

Last April, on the Gold Coast, Australia, the Carlisle-born star, 26, secured Commonwealth Games gold, throwing 80.26m as he broke the Commonwealth Games record in the process.

And, even against this disruptive backdrop, Miller is expected to be one of Britain's contenders for a medal in the Middle East at the World Championships.
