Workington Town half-back Jarrod Sammut has admitted a lapse in concentration led to his drop-goal in his side’s 16-13 defeat to London Broncos on Sunday.

Town were 12-10 ahead after 66 minutes before Matt Garside scored a converted try to put London 16-12 ahead.

With eight minutes to go, Sammut then kicked a drop-goal despite his side trailing by four points.

“I thought we were even-steven to be honest,” Sammut told News & Star Sport .

“I knew we had been on the receiving end of a lot of pressure and had to defend set after set. So I was trying to keep us positive and help us build some pressure, but in the midst of that I must have lost my game bearings.

“It came to the final play and I thought at the time it was a perfect opportunity but it’s just one of those things.

“We play a fast-paced game and it can be quite easy to lose your bearings and your take on the game.

“It was really disappointing to lose because I think on the day we deserved a win.”

Despite tasting defeat in his first run-out of 2016, Sammut said he was delighted to be back on the field after recovering from a double wrist reconstruction.

The Aussie scored twice on his return, picking up where he left off last year with his rich vein of try-scoring form.

“It’s amazing to be back, it really felt like some time since I had actually played a game,” he added. “The week before I was in talks with Phil about when to come back and when it came down to it we said it was now or never.

“I’m really happy to be back in with the team, it’s been tough not training with them.

“It’s also tough seeing the effort they have put in over the first three games for them to come up short. You want to be out there with them and you wonder if you could have added something.

“It was just about being in the right place at the right time with the tries I scored and it was great to have my first game back at home.

“Our fans are very vocal and I think it’s a little bit easier settling in when you’re at home.”

Town travel to face Batley Bulldogs on Sunday.

John Kear’s side are the surprise package in the Championship this season and are fifth in the table after three wins, including victories over Leigh and Halifax.

“They have started really strong and you don’t get the chance to have a slow start in this division,” Sammut said.

“You need to make the most of every opportunity you get. It’ll be a tough ask but we haven’t performed to our best yet. I want to help the team go forward and stay positive.

“We’re all pushing each other to get better.”
