Superman fell runner John Kelly has partaken in many incredible challenges over the years.
Last year he attempted “The Hartley Slam” in the Pennines and the Grand Round raising money for various charities as he went.
Now he’s been taking on the Wainwrights — 214 peaks in the Lake District taking in over 320 miles and 110K feet of ascent.
The current record stands at five days, 23 hours, and 49 minutes and John hopes to complete it in record time.
“I’ve always had a love for mountains and exploring,” he said. “With running I can still fully disconnect and enjoy the beauty of wild places, while challenging myself and learning valuable lessons along the way.
“The complete openness of the hills gives the opportunity for incredible freedom and creativity.”
As a father of four, the 36-year-old is fundraising for Action Medical Research who are the leading UK-wide charity helping and saving children’s lives through medical research.
John said: “I’ve always had a passion for kids, and particularly those that don’t have a fair start in life. In doing these fundraisers connected with big challenges, I believe it’s as much about raising awareness and the follow-on benefits as it is the direct immediate donations.
“I hope in highlighting a few different charities (last year I raised money for Blueprint for All) that more people will see one that really resonates with them and drives them to be actively engaged and supportive indefinitely.
“Many of these challenges, like my own, are not solo events. I have an immense crew helping — from road support to carrying gear through the hills with me.
“The community spirit in fell running around helping each other reach these big goals is enormous.”
Two days into his run, John developed problems with his foot which meant he has had to postpone the event for now. “I’ll continue on an ongoing basis,” he said. “Action Medical Research’s challenge is not a one-off event, and support to them shouldn’t be either. I take on these types of challenges regularly, and have decided to leave this fundraiser open while I do.
“At some point I hope to return to the Wainwrights.”
