INTERNATIONAL Dog Day is a day dedicated to celebrating all the special things about man’s best friend.
The day of celebration takes place on August 26 each year.
The event began in 2004 after Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert and animal advocate, created the day to celebrate the animals while bringing awareness to the number of animals that are living in shelters, and encouraging people to adopt those that are still waiting on their forever homes.
We asked our readers to send in their snaps of their four-legged companions and we were inundated with adorable pictures of all breeds of dog.
Samantha Mullen sent in a beautiful picture of Cleo the sausage dog on a little walk at Allonby, while Daniel Horsley sent in a comical picture of his three furry friends Riley, Willow and Merlin.
A picture of the adorable four-month-old Chloe was sent in by Tracy Chapman, while a picture of a young sleeping Willow was sent in by Joanne McDonald, who is bringing Willow home for the first time on Sunday.
From the tall to the small, the long hair to the short – there appears to be a dog out there for everyone!
There are a number of rescues waiting for a home in Cumbria.
Among those trying to find them new homes is Oak Tree Animals’ Charity at Oak Tree Farm, Wetheral Shields – call them on 01228 560082 or visit www.oaktreeanimals.org.uk
Another is Animal Rescue Cumbria who can be found at www.animalrescuecumbria.co.uk or call 01539 824293.
