Carlisle couple who met at a wedding marry at Blaithwaite House

But little did anyone know that for two strangers meeting at one such wedding, it would predict their future.

Carlisle residents electrician Stu Adams, 33, and nursery practitioner Mary Mattinson, 31 did not know that attending a wedding at the Roundthorn Country House in 2015 with a mutual friend would be the start of their own romantic story.

Five years after meeting, the pair took the relationship to the next level as Stu decided it was time to propose on October 26, 2020.

Recalling the day, Mary said: "We went glamping in Dalbeattie.

"Stu got down on one knee while we were out walking but had to do this three times as I kept walking away.

"I was totally unaware of what he was doing behind me."

For their hen and stag dos, Stu chose to go to Blackpool for a weekend whereas Mary had two hen dos.

Mary explains: "We had a  ‘Maryfest’ in my grandma and granda’s field, with games and tipis, and then the second hen do was a weekend away in Liverpool.

Finally, the big day arrived, and the pair said ‘I do’ at Blaithwaite House on November 12, 2022.

"We wanted a rustic feel and made a lot of the decorations ourselves," Stu said.

"Mary’s Dad Terry cut and sanded all of the wood slices, Mary and the bridesmaids made all of the decorative flowers, and I built our altar out of wooden ladders which we bought off Facebook marketplace.

"We also had peacock feathers throughout the décor – in the bridal flowers and isle decorations which tied in with Blaithwaite House's beautiful ‘peacock room’."

Mary donned a Georgie Mae dress which was a Bardot gown with lots of sparkles from Bridal Wishes in Carlisle and Stu wore a Marc Darcy 3-piece suit from Jenson Samuel.

The couple also had special guests alongside their bridesmaids and groomsmen which included Henry Gibson – six weeks old, who walked down the aisle with Jenny, his mum along with Mary and Stu’s dogs who Max and Penny.

After the ceremony, they held their reception at the venue and enjoyed the day and night with thirty-six guests and had a three-tier sponge cake, flavours of lemon, white chocolate, raspberry and chocolate.

Mary and Stu then headed to the dance floor for their first dance which was Oasis – ‘Let There Be Love’ - then guests joined them to dance to the band Sneaky Finch.

After the wedding, the pair jetted off to Barbados for their honeymoon.

Reminiscing about their favourite moments of the day, Stu said: “For me, it was seeing Mary for the first time at the altar."

But for Mary, it was when they were both alone.

She adds: "For me, it was when we had a quiet moment in the middle of the day when it was just me and Stu.

"Everyone was being seated for the wedding breakfast.

"The whole day was perfect. I did not stop smiling all day!"
