An injured husky dog who could not continue its walk down a Lake District fell had to be brought to safety by mountain rescuers.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called out about 11.30pm on Saturday by two women, one of them seven months pregnant, who had walked from Seathwaite to Scafell Pike.

On their descent, the six-year-old dog gave up and would walk no further despite the lure of treats.

A rescue team spokesman said: "One of our team members who lives close to the location set off first with his daughter, a student vet.

"They were followed by a vehicle of team members and one of our search dog handlers.

"It was quickly obvious that the dog would not be able to walk down, it made two steps with some gentle persuasion and loads of treats and stopped, so she was placed in a kind of nest made from our casualty bag, put onto the stretcher, strapped in and carried down arriving back in the valley at Seathwaite around 2am."

It turned out that the dog had cuts on its paws and that was the reason why it could not carry on walking.

"It had previously done the Yorkshire three peaks so is a fit dog - it was just unfortunate, but made for a 'different' kind of rescue from the norm," the spokesman added.

It took 13 team members just under three hours to complete the rescue at Styhead Path, Borrowdale.
