DOZENS of fans descended on a Cumbrian caravan park to catch a glimpse of comedy star Johnny Vegas.

The actor and TV personality officially opened the new facilities at Hillcroft Caravan Park, at Pooley Bridge, yesterday - the location of his new BBC comedy Home from Home .

A new shower and toilet block and a new games room have finally been opened at the park, after Storm Desmond halted progress.

Vegas joked and posed for photos with fans, making sure he had a selfie with everyone that wanted one.

He spoke of his joy to be back at the park, a place where he says he has many fond memories.

Asked about what it's like to be back in the Lakes, he said: "Fantastic, it's like I never left.

"There's a few destinations in the UK where I've instantly made friends, I've just felt like I've fit in.

"I love my home town, but it's great to get away somewhere where you don't feel like a stranger and you can walk in and pick up where you left off months ago.

"I'll have certain days where I wanna be back there (Cumbria), so being back up here with the family it's brilliant.

"It's been lovely, it's grand. I'm praying we get a second series [of Home from Home ], any excuse to spend more time here."

Vegas is staying in Cumbria with his family, before leaving the county on Saturday.

He says he'll be back, adding: "I'll definitely always come back, I've already talked about coming up here just to write.

"Last time I was up here I brought my artist material, I did a bit of painting."

He jokes: "The first one wasn't very successful, I shouldn't have left the curtains open, I might have disturbed a lot of people.

"I will definitely come and work here because I find it a very inspirational place to be.

"It's dangerous because folk are so sociable and sometimes I struggle to differentiate between work and sitting in the pub talking about the work I'm gonna do.

"But definitely, it's in my heart now."

Vegas says visiting Ullswater was a real eye-opener, he said: "It's really good to come to Ullswater, because I thought I knew the Lakes but I knew that (gestures a small amount with his fingers) much of it and I wanna know more of it."

Talking about the facilities, sales director at the park Jason Heath said: "We have a new toilet and shower block and a games room, consisting of 20 showers including a doggie shower.

"It has 16 toilets, six boilers, 17 sinks, six urinals and two family bathrooms."

Jason is delighted with the end product, adding: "We are very pleased, it's been a long time coming but we are here now and we are very happy with it.

"Storm Desmond took a lot out of us, we had a lot to do at our other park, so to finally have it done after that hiccup is a big relief."
