Mercedes flags flew at half past, as former colleagues lined the pavement to say a final goodbye to one of Carlisle's best-known businessmen.

Stuart Paton, 54, made his final journey in a black Mercedes hearse, making a special detour past the Rosehill Mercedes garage.

Workers, dressed in their signature black uniforms, stood in silence as they gave a guard of honour when the hearse and family cars detoured on their way to the crematorium yesterday.

The hearse and cortege paused briefly outside the dealership, which has been at the forefront of the Paton family for many years.

A fleet of black Mercedes cars were parked in a line outside the garage.

The cortege included several Mercedes cars, among them was a red vintage open-topped car, a sporty car and others that were beautifully polished.

Workers at the Land Rover Jaguar dealership across the road came out to pay their respects.

Mr Paton, who spent his career with his family business selling Mercedes cars, died after a short illness on March 15 in the Cumberland Infirmary.

He spent his life, since leaving Sedbergh School, selling cars through his family business.

His wife of 12 years, Yvonne Paton, said: "He would do anything for anyone.

"He didn't take many holidays and if he had a day off and customer needed something then he would go into work and sort it.

"He was that kind of person. He would never let anyone down."

His funeral took place at Carlisle Crematorium, where about 400 people turned out to say their own goodbye to a leading light in the city's business world.

A reception was held at the Halston Hotel and Penny Blue on Warwick Road after the service.

Donations were made to some of Mr Paton's favourite charities.
