Thieves have attempted to ram raid a Cumbrian supermarket and take its cash machine.

Police are appealing for help to trace those responsible for the "ram raid style" attack on the Booths supermarket in the south of the county.

Officers investigating Friday night's incident say raiders used a vehicle and tried to steal the ATM inside the building in Milnthorpe.

A police spokesman said that they left the scene a short time later, driving away through the rear entrance of the store and heading away in the direction of Carnforth via the A6.

The Booths supermarket in Milnthorpe opened five years ago, in 2012.

It is one of seven in Cumbria, run by the firm which has a history stretching back to 1847.

There are now 28 branches of the popular supermarket chain across the north west and Yorkshire.

Largely in Lancashire where there are 15 Booths stores, there are also branches in Cumbria, Yorkshire, Cheshire and Salford in Greater Manchester.

Witnesses or anyone who may have seen something suspicious in relation to the Milnthorpe incident are urged to contact Cumbria Police.
They can call 101 or send details on email to 101@cumbria.police.uk.
