Staff at a Workington primary school have taken on a sponsored spinathon to raise funds for a new sports kit.

Governors, teachers, and even the priest at St Patrick's RC Primary School in Workington, have taken to the saddle for the good cause.

Energize Gym in Workington has provided two spinning bikes for the challenge, which sees staff cycle in half hour shifts every day this week.

Staff are also being sponsored by the pupils' families and carers, and local businesses including Kevin Dickinson UPVC Ltd.

Debbie McCarron-Tuer, office support, said: "It's good that it's community connected and they've supported our cause.

"Everyone has been kind and generous."

She said the school is hoping to raise between £800 and £1,000.

The money will be used to purchase sports kits for pupils to compete in the next inter-school sports competition.

Mrs McCarron-Tuer said: "A lot of families are on low income so it's unfair to expect them to purchase kits."

She added that the school had also been affected by recent budget cuts.

Ashley Ryan, Year 6 teacher, helped organise the fundraiser with Mrs McCarron-Tuer.

He said: "We're wanting to raise money for a sports kit so it seemed appropriate to do something active.

"There's a big focus on physical activity in school now and this is a public showcase of staff doing physical activity.

"It's been good for everybody - we've had a positive response from all the staff and the kids have really enjoyed it as well."

Mrs McCarron-Tuer said that pupils have been cheering the staff on during breakfast club and lunchtime, and give them a big round of applause when they've finished their stint on the bike.

"It's good for them. They're seeing us exercise and saying it's good to do exercise - they're picking up on it."
