Police were called to a hotel in Carlisle city centre following the discovery of a dead body.
The force said an investigation was launched after the dead man was found at the Ibis on Botchergate.
Detectives are currently classing the inquiry as one into an "unexplained death".
But they added it was not being treated as suspicious.
The body was discovered at about 9am today.
A police presence could be seen on the main city street this morning.
There were two police vans by the hotel, with officers standing guard at the entrances.
A force spokesman said: “Police were called at 9.05am today following the discovery of an adult male’s body, which has subsequently been declared as deceased.
"The Coroner has been informed."
