A driver crashed into a wall and bus stop after suffering a medical episode at the wheel, police have revealed.
A white Peugeot Expert van crashed into a wall and bus stop on the A596 at Hall Park, near Workington police station at about 6.50pm on Thursday.
A police spokesman said: "An off duty police officer was assisted by members of the public in administering first aid to the 59-year-old male driver. This included the use of a defibrillator."
The driver was then transferred to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle in a critical condition. He is now said to be in a stable condition.
The road was closed for about three hours while emergency crews dealt with the incident and police carried out accident investigation work.
Police thanked the public for their patience while the road was closed.
