A second warning of rain for the week has been brought forward and new warnings of wind, snow and ice have been issued.

The Met Office has re-issued a yellow warning of rain which will now come into force at 3pm tomorrow and lasts until 6pm on Friday.

The forecaster has today issued further weather warnings for Friday and into the weekend.

A yellow warning of wind  is valid from 3am to 6pm on Friday, while the same level of warning for snow and ice comes into force at 9pm on Friday. It is due to last throughout the night and into Saturday.

Met Office advisor Kevin Wadsworth said: "During Thursday afternoon and evening the cloud will thicken and we’ll start to see outbreaks of rain developing and becoming heavy at times, especially over the Cumbrian Fells.

"The rain will continue into Friday morning and eventually move away around the middle of the day, although there is a chance it could linger through the afternoon. Confidence on this will increase by tomorrow. "

He added that there is a small chance of a light covering of snow on the fells.

During this period rainfall amounts are likely to be between 20 mm and 40 mm widely, with up to 60 mm possible over high ground.

The Environment Agency said flooding later in the week cannot be ruled out.

Marina Powell, the agency's flood resilience team leader for Cumbria, said: "The cumulative effect of successive rain this week means highest impacts may be seen on Friday."

Cumbria is still feeling the brunt of the back of America's Storm Jonas which is causing disruption around the county for a second day.

Three flood warnings, a string of flood alerts and and weather warning remain in place today.

Flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected, take action - have been issued for the River Eden at Carlisle, Rickerby Park, Swifts and Stoneyholme Golf Courses and for the River Greta at Keswick for the campsite, Rugby Club, Quinta, Fitz Park and Riverside Flats Areas.

An earlier flood warning for Wiza Beck & Black Beck at Wigton has been removed.

The Environment Agency said both rivers are expected to peak later this morning as the heavy band of rain clears eastwards.

Today some further showers are expected but rainfall totals will be small.

There is also a warning for Keswick Campsite as the level of Derwentwater in relation to the campsite is expected to peak later today.

Flood alerts, where people should be prepared for flooding, have been issued for:

  • Rivers Esk and Irthing
  • Rivers Wampool and Ellen
  • Lower River Eden in Carlisle
  • Middle River Eden around Kirkoswald and Lazonby area

The first yellow warning of rain is valid until 3pm today.

It warns that many parts of the county could see 20-40mm of rain. However, on exposed upland areas, that could rise to between 50-80mm.
