MORE than 100 people have joined a search to trace a missing Glasson man.

Albert Birkett was last seen in the village on January 2 at 9.30am.

The 69-year-old is described as being of slim build, with short grey hair.

He was last seen wearing his work clothes, a green boiler suit.

On Sunday morning, the streets were packed with parked cars as members of the Cumberland Farmers Foxhounds met at the Highland Laddie Inn, on Water Street at 10am to scour the area in the latest bid to find him.

Mark Messenger, landlord of the Highland Laddie Inn, said: "Since Albert went missing, teams including the coastguard, the Lake District Mountain Rescue Searchdogs and the Cumberland Farmers Foxhounds have all worked hard in their search.

"Sunday morning saw the most amount of people involved in helping to find him - with a turn out of more than 100."

Early on Thursday morning, coastguard teams from Annan, Burgh-by-Sands, Maryport, and Whitehaven, assisted with the search.

A spokesman from Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said: "A shoreline search was conducted with nothing found, the teams were then directed to search inland along with members of local Mountain Rescue Teams.

"At first light those areas were searched again with again nothing found.

"Friends, family and neighbours also aided in the search by checking surrounding buildings and fields.

"A grateful thanks to the publicans of the Highland Laddie Inn whom let us use the premises as a base of operations and very kindly supplied us with refreshments and use of their facilities."

A Cumbria Police officer in Glasson refused to comment on the search when contacted by the News & Star.

If anyone has seen Mr Birkett or knows of his whereabouts, they are asked to contact police on 101.

If Albert sees this appeal himself he is asked to contact police to let officers know he is safe and well.
