Rail passengers have been warned to expect delays on services between Cumbria and London after trespassers and a defective track cause disruption.

Passengers are set to experience delays on Virgin services on the West Coast Mainline leaving Carlisle this afternoon.

Trespassers were found on the railway between Stafford and Wolverhampton, which has had a knock-on effect for the timetable and has created problems for trains heading to Euston.

A Virgin Trains spokesperson said: "Train services running through these stations may be delayed by up to 20 minutes. Disruption is expected until 3.45pm."

A speed restriction has also been put in place after a defective track was discovered between Rugby and Milton Keynes Central.

All lines are open, though, and the Virgin spokesperson added: "Disruption is expected until the end of the day."
