Management at a new city nightclub have spoken out to reassure revellers, after allegations of a sexual assault.

A man was arrested following an incident in the Bomb Shelter, on Botchergate, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The club has not long been open and Cameron Martin, from the Bomb Shelter, released a statement to reassure men and women who visit the venue that their safety is top priority.

“As soon as this incident was reported to door staff, they acted promptly and effectively,” said Mr Martin.

“The victim was quickly taken to a quiet area, away from others to be interviewed by police.

“The investigation is still live, and as such we will need to ensure that this gets resolved, in the most professional manner possible.”

The Bomb Shelter also subscribes to the police-wide Ask Angela scheme, offering support to anyone who feels uncomfortable.

Mr Martin continued: “No matter who you are, if you are in a situation where you feel threatened, come to the bar and ask for Angela.

“This is a code for us to know that you are in distress. Without a fuss, we will take you to a quiet area away from others, either helping to get you home, or removing the other persons that are threatening.

“It is imperative that we are made aware of these situations as soon as possible, in order to act promptly and effectively.”

He later added: “Bars, clubs and pubs try extremely hard to keep their customers safe. We’re strictly monitored by the police, council and licensing authorities.

“We’re told what we can do and can’t do in these situations.

“Regardless of the outcome, we are doing everything possible to support the investigation, all accusations, regardless of their nature are taken seriously.”

The victim has herself praised the club for its actions.

She said: “The people [there] were so supportive. Thank you so much Cameron.

“[The club staff] did their job. The Bomb Shelter is a good pub.”

The alleged incident took place between 12.20am and 1.20am on Sunday.

Cumbria Police yesterday released details of the incident, in the hope of identifying any potential witnesses who may have been in the club at the time and seen something.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of the sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman.

He was released under investigation on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said: “We want to talk to anyone who may have information regarding the investigation.”

Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 101.
