ARCH-BREXITEER Nigel Farage has personally congratulated new Workington MP Mark Jenkinson on his historic election victory.
In a tweet, the leader of the Brexit Party wrote: “A personal congratulations to Mark Jenkinson. He was an excellent Ukip candidate in 2015.”
Mr Jenkinson was one of the two founding members of the UK Independence Party’s west Cumbria branch and stood for the party in the 2015 general election.
However, he resigned from the party the following year amid concerns about the party’s approach to the EU referendum and issues over internal democracy.
The father-of-four served as its chairman from August 2012 when Mr Farage was leader of Ukip.
Before the election, he was also endorsed by Workington’s only other Tory MP since the constituency was formed in 1916.
Richard Page won the seat in the by-election caused by the elevation of Labour’s Fred Peart to the House of Lords in 1976 and had written to his fellow Conservative to wish him luck.
