A Sellafield apprentice has been named as one to watch for the future.
Phillipa Hawley, a third year degree apprentice in nuclear quality who works for Sellafield Limited, has been included in the 2020 Northern Power Women Future List.
The list recognises trailblazers who are making a difference in their chosen field to support Northern Power Women’s mission to accelerate gender equality.
Phillipa, 25, of Workington, was nominated by the Cumbrian branch of the organisation Women in Nuclear, which promotes equality in the nuclear industry.
Phillipa is part of the first cohort of the nuclear quality degree apprenticeship and Women in Nuclear said she has taken the lead in promoting her profession and the scheme within her organisation, with companies and professional institutes across the nuclear industry as well as local schools and training organisations.
She is a STEM ambassador, volunteering at events across the county, is a member of the NI Young Generation Group and also Women in Nuclear.
Claire Gallery-Strong, chair of WiN Cumbria, said: “She is changing the face of nuclear industry, changing perceptions of apprenticeship and demonstrating that our Cumbria women are leaders on new futures for the north.”
Karine Rackham, deputy chair for WiN Cumbria, added: “Philippa has demonstrated great talent and promise.
“She has already made a significant contribution to promoting the nuclear industry, her profession and supports the voice on gender balance for our region.”
Philippa said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be added to this list. I hope I can continue showcasing the exciting career and STEM opportunities available to young people and to promote diversity and inclusion into the industry.”
Rob Jones, corporate lead, quality, at Sellafield Limited, said: “She is a positive role model for everyone, especially for young people thinking about a career in quality.
“Her positive and professional approach shine through in everything she does and her inclusion in the list for 2020 is an indicator of her tremendous potential.”
