HOT and dry weather brings challenges enough for firefighters getting more calls to fires in the open – but a bushfire near Ennerdale Water brought its own problems.

Firefighters from Frizington initially struggled to access the location with the equipment they needed until help arrived in the form of a nearby farm hand.

A member of Dave Vickers’ team who works on the Mireside Farm arrived to help the crew transport their heavy equipment to the blaze.

They needed a light portable pump and two hose reel jets just to contain the fire.

The crew has since paid a special thanks to the worker saying: “We would like to thank one of David Vickers’ workers from Mireside Farm of Ennerdale for helping us move heavy equipment from the fire engine to the seat of the fire by using their quad and trailer... to get the equipment where they needed it.”

The callout came just after 5pm on Sunday.

And fire crews are urging people to take extra care as the warm, dry weather continues.

Crews in Carlisle were called to another fire out in the open at about 6pm on Monday beside the River Caldew, when a crew from Carlisle East Station tackled a log fire.

A spokesman said: “It looked like a campfire, and in this weather it is very easy for them to get out of control. We want people to take care and not put themselves in any unnecessary danger. There were no injuries and we extinguished the logs.”
