Musicians from Carlisle have collaborated with others across the world to create a song that captures the emotions of lockdown.

Sonos Omnes, which features four musicians from Carlisle, is a nation-spanning band that has released its debut single Lectures from Lockdown.

The single shares the thoughts and feelings of the lockdown experiences as told by lyricists Troy Slater and Emma Scott, who are both from Carlisle, Mick Pettinger, from Rotherham, and Douglas Baker, from Toronto.

“We all had our thoughts and our own feelings about lockdown and what was going on in the world so we wrote the lyrics from our own perspectives,” said Troy.

“While we’re in lockdown, we had time to think about society and ‘is this the best that we can do?’.

“With the collaboration and cooperation mirroring what we thought should happen across the world, nations collaborating and cooperating, peace and goodwill - all the good things.

“ My experience of lockdown was very much about good community spirit and people being kind and generous to each other.

“Our message is that we can do better: we should look at the positive things in life, collaborate and cooperate to make things easier for everybody in the world.

“It’s in the spirit of community and collaboration.”

The band is a collaborative project which began before lockdown created by Troy and Conny Pettersson, a session drummer from Sweden. They then reached out to other people who they knew.

Mike Alexander and Jonathan Gash, both from Carlisle, are also involved with the band and local artist Daniel Ibbotson designed the artwork for the single.

Troy said: “I’ve always worked with a lot of musicians on loads of collaborative things like art exhibitions or different bands.

“When Conny was over here, we got chatting about music in general, our aspirations and things like that. Although we like playing in bands, we had a feeling that we would like to write and publish music of all styles.”

“The name means ‘all sounds’ in Latin, so it seemed very appropriate to use that name.”

All proceeds from Lectures from Lockdown will be donated to The Care Workers Charity Covid-19 crisis grants fundraiser.

There are more songs in the works and Sonos Omnes is hoping to release its next single at the end of the summer.
