What should have been their dream wedding on a beach in Cyprus turned into a car boot celebration for one couple, but cancelled plans and a splash of rain didn’t manage to dampen their delight.
With their original plans to fly out to the sun-flooded Cyprus shore on August 17 forced to be cancelled, and their August 21 wedding put on-hold, lovebirds Sophie Mullhall and John Ennis took a different approach to their disrupted day.
In their six years together, the Mirehouse couple have experienced a fairytale romance, with Sophie working as a waitress in a cocktail bar – literally – and a smitten John sipping on boozy drinks to catch her eye – despite not being the biggest fan of the bar's main concoctions.
Putting an end to their time as simply boyfriend-and-girlfriend, John, got down on one knee on a Paris New Year's Eve and popped the question.
And they wasted no time getting wedding preparations in order – particularly John's all-important stag, whisking his entourage away in March for a week in Benidorm.
But as the big day got closer, 28-year-old Sophie and John, 37, were "devastated" to realise their plans for a Sirens Beach at Cyprus would have to be halted, with the celebrations now set to take place in August 2021 instead.
And what do you do when your glorious, sand-filled wedding is pushed back? Have a picnic in the boot of your car, of course!
On Tuesday evening, the day their big event was meant to begin, the pair packed a picnic, dropped their youngsters Paris Ennis, 12, Calvin Ennis, 11, and 10-month-old Reggie with loved ones, and headed to St Bees Beach – where they were met by the perfect amount of traditional Cumbrian drizzle.
Not ones to complain, Sophie and John simply adapted to the weather, and set up camp in the boot of their car for a romantic, albeit slightly cramped, picnic by the sea.
And although it wasn't quite what they had planned, the happy couple loved their "little break" from their day-to-day routine, just the two of them, "with nothing but a spare wheel as company".
While the pair are disappointed to not be getting married on Friday as planned, they have their fingers crossed the plans will go smoothly for next year – and of course the stag and hen dos are both already booked, with John heading back to Benidorm for an updated party, and Sophie following suit, taking her team of hens to the same place early next year.
The couple are looking forward to their 2021 celebrations, with bridesmaids Patricia Nightingale and youngster Paris, and best men Wammo Walmsley and little Calvin by their side.
