Getting through 500 miles in just one month is clearly a walk in the park for these three youngsters, who have completed a heartwarming challenge in memory of their beloved granddad.

Youngsters James, eight, Phoebe, six, and two-year-old Ethan McGrath have spent their summer holidays walking, running and cycling every day to raise funds for Wasdale Mountain Rescue.

The trio set themselves the tricky task to thank the group for all they do, and say a wider thank you to all Mountain Rescue teams, many of which helped search for their dearly-missed granddad after he became lost in the Scottish hills, where he sadly passed away.

Throughout the 42 school-free days of summer, the siblings, from Irton, have been doing everything from leisurely walks in torrential rain to sunny 32-mile-long bike rides from their home to St Bees to chip away at their hefty miles.

And completing their challenge with 10 days to spare, the youngsters have raised an amazing £1,320, with the total still climbing.

“I think they are happy that they have completed the challenge and they are amazed at how kind people have been donating so much to them, even strangers that don’t even know them,” delighted mum, Jenny McGrath, said.

“They did something everyday no matter what, and they’ve decided to keep walking, running and cycling to see how many miles they can accumulate by the end of the holidays!”

Supporting Mountain Rescue is a cause close to the family’s heart, especially after losing their grandad to the fells, and Jenny couldn’t be more pleased with her dedicated little team.

She said: “As parents we are so proud of them, not only for raising the funds for the Mountain Rescue but for having the motivation and can-do attitude to go out everyday come rain or shine.

“They never complained about it, and secretly I think they enjoyed the wet days more!

“We feel that it’s been an incredible positive way to spend the summer of 2020 with the uncertain times we are in, and it’s something they will never forget.”

But it wouldn’t have been possible without support, and Jenny added: “To everyone who has donated, we can’t thank them enough – it actually gives me a lump in my throat seeing the lovely comments and generosity of people.

“It’s all for my dad and their wonderful granddad. He would be so, so proud.

“You’ll never know how much it means to us all as a family.”
