An Egremont youngster is the first ever female to catch a salmon for her fishing club – on just her second attempt at fishing on the river Ehen.

Ruby Butterworth is only 11, but is already showing promise in the sport.

She is not only the youngest but also the first ever female to catch a salmon for Egremont Anglers.

Her dad Jamie said: “Ruby has started fishing on the river Ehen.

“As anyone will agree, it is very hard to catch a salmon in this day and age for any angler.

“Ruby caught her first ever fish (under 1lb weight) and was delighted and wanted a photo.

“She carried on fishing and to my amazement she hooked a 5lb salmon and managed to land it on her own, making her the youngest and first-ever female to catch a salmon for Egremont Anglers.

“She went on to hook another three fish and lost two of them, which were a sea trout of around 3lb and another salmon around 5-6lb.

“All the members are over the moon, a little girl is showing people how it’s done at only her second occasion fishing on the Ehen.”

Ruby was presented with a £50 voucher from Egremont Anglers as a recognition of her achievements.

Jamie said: “She was absolutely over the moon.”
