A woman who received a fine claiming she hadn’t paid for her car parking ticket has spoken out warning others to keep their receipts so they can squash the fine.

Angelique Sansome parked in Fisher Street car park in Carlisle, a car park that you pay on your departure, fortunately she kept her receipt for the parking as she was soon sent four letters telling her she owed £100 to the company.

After speaking to others, she quickly realised that she was not the only one in the situation with many people paying the fine because they had not kept the receipt so had no proof of payment to appeal the charge.

Miss Sansome explained: “I parked in that car park and when I came out I was talking to a lady and you have to pay when you come out so I knew I’d paid for my parking.

“I was sent a letter issuing a fine. I thought 'I paid that car parking, I know I have'. I got in touch with them and eventually they came back and said it was quashed.

“What concerns me is that they sent me four letters in total and when the lady from the charity shop came to see me she said they do it all the time.

“It concerned me because lots of people will pay that because you get a fright and not a lot of people keep hold of their tickets.”

Miss Sansome is trying to remind residents to keep their tickets as a proof of payment in case the same thing happens to them.

Her mum has also been caught out by this in the past – having not kept the ticket as proof of payment she was forced to pay the fine.

The car park on Fisher Street is owned by Car Parking Partnership.
