As pubs offering ‘substantial meals’ open back up for business later from today to serve meals to their sorely-missed regulars, we decided to ask readers where they are looking forward to heading first.

THE LION AND THE LAMB, GOSFORTH

Dinah Masey was full of praise for this Gosforth establishment, which will be her first pub stop this week saying: “This pub in Gosforth does great food. They make a real effort to show they care inside and out.”

One reviewer also said they were “impressed with social distancing and Covid measures, definitely gone above and beyond to make you feel safe.

“Staff are super friendly and can’t fault it for the price!”

THE PARK HEAD, THORNHILL

Reader Karl Connor waxed lyrical about this Thornhill haunt: “Can’t beat the Park Head at Thornhill.

“Brilliant family-friendly place, who’ve done really well managing Covid regulations.”

Another happy customer said: “It’s always great food and service from Tina and the team. This is now enhanced by free sauce with your steak – and a free pudding.”

THE GLOBE, WHITEHAVEN

The pub on Main Street has a number of rave reviews on Tripadvisor.

One customer said: “Excellent food as always, never had a bad meal to date. Friendly staff, good crack, and overall the best place for Sunday dinner ever.”

Another said: “Never had a bad meal at this place, always spot on. Friendly, helpful staff, food is excellent.”

THE VAGABOND, WHITEHAVEN

One reviewer spoke very highly of this versatile venue which proved a hit with locals and visitors to the town, alike saying:

“On the harbourside, the Vagabond is both a great pub and also a great place to eat. Run by a wonderfully friendly family team, its a real pleasure to visit.”

They went on: “A combination of well cooked, good value food (try the goulash!) and selection of real ales make it a welcoming and well located place.

“Refuel there while you are enjoying the town’s Georgian architecture and unique harbour.”

SUNNY HILL PUB, WHITEHAVEN

This Whitehaven pub serves a wide range of meals but is best known for its honest and beloved British pub favourites.

One reviewer stated: “Excellent menu plenty to choose from. Friendly service, good value for money. I will most certainly return again.”
