UPDATE 11.41am: Flood alerts for Rivers Caldew and Petteril, Middle River Eden, and Upper River Eden no longer in force. 

FLOOD alerts, including one for Carlisle, remain in force for north and west Cumbria.

The Flood Information Service has seven flood alerts in the area and one flood warning - in the region there are a total of 13 alerts after "persistent" rains.

Alerts indicate that "flooding is possible - be prepared" - warnings indicate that "flooding is expected - immediate action required".

The flood alerts in place include:

Lower River Eden

A spokesman said: "Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Crosby-on-Eden, Linstock, Carlisle and Rockcliffe areas. High river levels are possible on the River Eden, River Caldew, River Petteril, Durranhill Beck, Brunstock Beck, Gosling Sike, Little Caldew, Parham Beck, Rockcliffe Beck and their tributaries. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences."

The alert continues from yesterday.

Rivers Caldew and Petteril

This alert was also in force yesterday.

The spokesman said: "River levels are expected to rise at the Cummersdale river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall throughout Friday.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible today and into Saturday.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Millhouse, Caldbeck, Sebergham, Ivegill, Stockdalewath, Dalston, Cummersdale, Denton Holme, Greystoke, Plumpton, Upperby and Harraby Green areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Caldew, Cald Beck, River Ive, River Roe, North Petteril, River Petteril and their tributaries."

Middle River Eden

This alert was in force yesterday.

"River levels are expected to rise at the Eden Valley river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall throughout Friday.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible today and into Saturday 19/12/20.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Langwathby, Skirwith, Melmerby, Lazonby, Kirkoswald, Armathwaite, Brocklewath, Wetheral and Warwick Bridge areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Eden, Skirwith Beck, Melmerby Beck, Harrow Beck, Raven Beck, Cairn Beck, Trout Beck and their tributaries. We are closely monitoring the situation."

Rivers Cocker, Marron and Derwent

The spokesman said: "River levels are starting to rise at the Southwaite Bridge river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall throughout Friday.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible today and into Saturday.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Buttermere, Lorton Valley, Cockermouth, Branthwaite, Bridgefoot, Camerton, Barepot and Workington areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Cocker, Whit Beck, River Derwent, River Marron, Lostrigg Beck and their tributaries."

Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwent Water

The spokesman said: "Lake level remains high as a result of heavy overnight rainfall.

"Further heavy rain is expected throughout Friday. Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Seatoller, Stonethwaite, Rosthwaite, Grange-in-Borrowdale and Derwent Water shoreline areas.

"High river and lake levels are possible on the River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck, Watendlath Beck, Derwent Water and their tributaries."

Rivers Lowther and Eamont

A spokesman said: "River levels have risen at the Pooley Bridge river gauge as a result of rainfall overnight and today.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible from 11:30 Friday.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Bampton, Patterdale, Glenridding, Dockray, Pooley Bridge, Dacre, Eamont Bridge and Penrith areas.

"High river and lake levels are possible on the River Lowther, Haweswater Beck, Goldrill Beck, Grisedale Beck, Glenridding Beck, Aira Beck, Ullswater, River Eamont, Dacre Beck, Thacka Beck and their tributaries."

Upper River Eden

The spokesman said: "River levels are expected to rise at the Appleby river gauge as a result of persistent rainfall throughout Friday.

"Consequently, flooding of roads and farmland is possible today and into Saturday.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying land and roads in the Ravenstonedale, Kirkby Stephen, Brough, Warcop, Great Asby, Great Ormside, Appleby-in-Westmorland, Bolton, Crosby Ravensworth and Morland areas.

"High river levels are possible on the River Eden, Scandal Beck, Swindale Beck, Crooks Beck, Asby Beck, River Lyvennet, Morland Beck and their tributaries."

A warning has been issued for Keswick Campsite that was also in force yesterday.

The spokesman said: "River levels remain high at the Lodore river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall overnight. Further rain is forecast throughout Friday 18/12/20 which will cause levels to rise. Consequently, flooding of property, roads and farmland is expected.

"Flooding is expected to affect low lying areas bordering the shores of Derwent Water and the frontage of the Keswick Camping and Caravan Club Site.

"We expect river and lake levels to remain high into Saturday."

The service said they are monitoring the situation closely.
