Although the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to many sports, one club feel "lucky" they've been able to return to the water when restrictions were eased.

Eden Valley Divers were able to take to the waters in Cumbria again, with some changes in place, when restrictions were eased and took a new learner onboard.

Shannon Parker from Penrith, contacted the group saying she was interested in learning to dive.

Shannon decided to enrol with ScotSAC and Eden Valley Divers during June and her formal training started in July.

Covid restrictions were lifted and guidance from The British Diving Safety Group provided advice on how to do things Covid safe.

David Skelton, branch diving officer for Eden Valley Drivers, said: “It’s been a real pleasure teaching Shannon with her endurance, enthusiasm, and dedication.

“She’s exceptionally hard working and we wish her well with her diving trips and experiences wherever they take her.

“We did all the lectures outdoors, which is slightly different to our normal procedures.”

Talking about how diving has been effected by the pandemic Mr Skelton said it has been hard but they had been very lucky in comparison to many other sports.

“Well like all sports we have been restricted to what we can do,” he said.

“It’s been difficult because we cannot travel to places that we have done in the past.”

The club managed to travel once during the summer when restrictions were eased but since then have been confined to the waters in Cumbria.

Mr Skelton added: “A lot of people are a lot worse off than we are.

“But certainly the trip abroad and going to exotic places hasn’t gone ahead.

“We have been very cautious.

“We do not push ourselves. We are careful and do not do anything extreme.”

Before each dive a full risk assessment is taken to reduce the possibility of putting extra pressure on the NHS.

“We have been very cautious” added Mr Skelton.

“Certain things have been adapted.”
