Plainclothes police officers could been seen patrolling bars and nightclubs in England and Wales, as part of a plan to protect women, it has been announced.

The government had opposed an amendment to its domestic abuse bill that would create a national register of stalkers, but the House of Lords voted on Monday evening to send it back to MPs to consider. Within minutes, Boris Johnson announced a series of “immediate steps” to improve security.

Among these steps is for plainclothes police officers to patrol bars and nightclubs and actively identify predatory and suspicious offenders at night.

We asked our readers what they thought of this idea and here's what you had to say.

Paul Stanyer said: "This is a complete waste of time. Drunken brawls in pubs are usually handled by bouncers, most of the assaults on women happen outside the pubs when they are on their way home.

"These officers would be better deployed outside."

David Eyley commented: "If you're doing nothing wrong, then you've nothing to fear. If it increases safety for women, it gets my vote."

Pippa Iona Wordsworth added: "Unsafe. Threatened.

"Think there's an awful lot of people who've lost all faith and trust in the police."

Pat Dent explained: "Why not we may all feel safer, if we are doing nothing wrong why should we mind."

Martin Sampson said: "Complete nonsense, in four years I have only seen police officers in our village a handful of times so how are they going to find the manpower to police the thousands of bars in the UK."

Lynda Connors added: "It might help, a different set of eyes and all that. It’s not enough but it would be at least something. The only people who would object are those doing wrong."

Steven Little commented: "If it makes people feel safer then all good for me. Doesn’t help the person who is on their own away from a crowded area though."
