THE maintenance of a Grade II listed Longtown landmark will be part funded by Arthuret Parish Council after concerns were raised over its upkeep.
St Michael’s Well was discussed at a meeting last week.
The tourist attraction is located behind St Michael’s and All Angels Church, Longtown.
Historic England describes it as a “holy well, probably early 17 century”.
Funds were previously made available for the restoration of the stonework, with a small amount set aside for maintenance.
Last month, former resident Hazel Thomlinson wrote to the council to say the pathways leading to the site would be ‘unsafe’ if foliage was not regularly cut back.
Karen Johnson, parish clerk, said: “My concern is that we will not have enough to keep it up to a reasonable standard — I would ask the council to help with the funding to be maintained.”
Gordon Routledge, vice chairman of the council, agreed said the council should consider funding it year on year.
Sir James Bart, council chairman, said: “We want to look after it and keep it tidy.”
