Readers were saddened to see the back of yet another big name on Carlisle’s retail scene as Iceland Foods closed its city centre branch on Saturday, May 22.

The news has been greeted with concern by city councillors, who fear the closure of the supermarket will deprive families of a good value for money option.

News and Star readers were asked how much they would miss the supermarket on Lowther Street.

Here’s what you had to say.

Susan Jackson said: “I used to go in to get my shopping delivered to Wigton as [I] don’t drive. [It will] be a big miss.”

Christine Page said: “If you don’t have a car its hard to get to the others. This one was right by a bus stop – perfect if you have heavy shopping.”

David Eyley said: “One out near Halfords, and excellent bus services to it. It’s not like we’re losing it entirely.”

Gavin Johnston said: “That really is a shame.

“Lots of people use the bus to shop here.

“ [It] brings a lot of footfall to town without the congestion and the unit is too big for most businesses.”

Pauline Burke said: “Another empty building in town. Used to be a thriving shopping centre.”

Sarah Kelton said: “My mum went all the time and was straight on the bus home, its not great for the people who can’t drive.”

Linsey Clark said she thought the news was “awful”.

Pauline Mckie said she would miss the “lovely staff.”

Ally Marshall said: “This Iceland is gonna be a big miss to me as it’s easy for me to get to. I can’t get the the other two.”
