READERS have been airing their views after an application to open a bar on Carlisle's Devonshire Street was submitted to Carlisle City Council.

Proposals to convert the vacant Carlisle estate agents, and offices, were lodged on Monday for the Grade II listed premises.

The property is 10 Devonshire Street, the former PFK estate agency, who has since moved to Rosehill Business Park.

Reader Rachael Louvain Greig said: "It will be another overpriced bar selling overpriced gins."

Louise Wright said: "Nothing but bars and bistros now, so sad.

"You can go to town and get as much food and drink as you want, but for any decent shopping it's going back to the way of having to go to Newcastle again."

Tricia Longford posted: "We need shops not bars."

Shirley Mcmillan Rycroft posted: "Oh no, not more bars."

Bob Southward said: "Plenty of pubs already in Carlisle."

Joanne Taylor posted: "Surprised its not a nail salon or barbers."

In response Mark Hamilton said: "It does not matter what opens up as long as they employ local people, who spend their wages locally."

Moreno Giovannini said: "Someone is investing in the local economy , will employ people who in turn will spend their wages.

"All those wanting shops instead, take a gamble and open one yourselves."

Andrew Hunter posted: "Laughable people complaining and saying they want a shop instead.

"Get up, help the community and open one then."
