A Special Forces veteran has set a new world record by completing a continuous hike of all 214 Wainwrights in 11 days.
Chris Gaskin, 39, set out to climb all 214 peaks in the Lake District on Tuesday, May 18 and finished his challenge in Keswick on Saturday, May 29.
Chris walked and climbed 325 miles unsupported, meaning he had to carry all of his food, maps, cooking and camping equipment, water, spare clothing, safety, and first aid kit.
He climbed 95,000 ft – the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest four times.
“As I was coming into Keswick Moot Hall, there was more of a crowd gathered than I would have expected," he said. “It’s not finished. For me, it’s about raising awareness for Walking for the Wounded.”
Chris, who was a Special Forces paramedic has seen first-hand the need for the charity he raised £5,000 for.
“I had the task of treating these people who lost legs, that were involved in IED blasts.
“I treated some of these individuals and saw some of the wounds that these guys got.
“What I’ve also seen since then is individuals, like Duncan Slater - a double amputee - go on to complete the Marathon des Sables.
“These people are so inspirational and for me to be able to just put myself through a little bit of pain to provide some relief for some of these guys who are not in as good a position as I’d like them to be is definitely within my capabilities.”
