Upgrades to the original historic platforms at Carlisle’s Citadel Station are planned.
In a vision proposed to Carlisle City Council, platform resurfacing works could be undertaken at platforms two and three.
In plans, Network Rail said: "The station is Grade ll* listed and is of high significance as a historic railway building and one of the most important early major railway stations in Britain.
"The platform construction, copings and surfacing are highly significant as they date from the original construction.”
In a letter submitted to the city council Jo Jebb, representative of Avanti West Coast, said that the platform refurbishments would ensure the new platform surfaces meet current industry standards.
She said: “In particular, the condition and general topography of certain areas of the platforms is of concern due to general slip, trip and fall hazards and that’s coupled with crossfalls towards the track and a lack of tactiles throughout.
"The crossfalls at other stations have lead to incidents where pushchairs and luggage have rolled towards or onto the track and surveys show that Carlisle has crossfalls in keys areas that need to be addressed.
"With regards to the lack of tactiles, a recent incident at Eden Park Station resulted in a visually impaired person walking off the platform edge because there were no tactiles to warn them otherwise. The person was fatally injured and there is now an industry effort to install tactiles at all stations where there currently are none.
"The proposed platform refurbishment works will address the above issues and ensure the new platform surfaces meet current industry standards."
