A PLANNING application has been submitted that could see more than 150 new homes built on a controversial site in Carlisle.

Cumbria-based developer Genesis Homes have revealed proposals to build 157 dwellings on land at Carleton Clinic, to the west of Carlisle.

The site was previously the subject out a successful outline planning application by Homes England in February 2020 - then, it was the latest in a string of developments in the area of the former clinic, following the Speckled Wood site, the Moorside Place development and The Coppice.

Eleven objections to the plans were submitted by residents concerned about the impact on nearby infrastructure, while the area's city councillor, Deborah Earl, raised safety concerns about a mini roundabout at Garlands Road and Cumwhinton Road. At the time, she said the roundabout was "completely inadequate" for use by 719 new homes and asked for the decision to be deferred.

However - the application did include a commitment to almost £700,000 in section 106 contributions, including allocations for education provision and highways improvements.

It comes after city councillors called for new schools in the north of Carlisle to be built using section 106 money to reduce strain on existing provision.

The county council said it was "securing financial contributions from housing developers to ensure those places are provided at the appropriate time."

The new application is a reserved matters application that will finalise the details of the new properties.

A design and access statement written by Genesis states that the company aims to "Develop a thriving residential community in an exceptional landscape setting," while meeting "the challenge of providing a distinctive, high-quality neighbourhood that concentrates on meeting local needs.
