AN MP has welcomed a new pilot scheme by the Government to boost the recruitment of magistrates in north Cumbria.
The Government is investing more than £1 million into a programme of work to recruit more magistrates and promote the magistracy as an attractive option to a diverse range of potential applicants.
John Stevenson, Conservative MP for Carlisle, said: “The magistracy plays a crucial role in our justice system.
“Retaining our magistrates' court here in Carlisle is vitally important, and the recruitment of magistrates is pivotal to this.”
The work includes a marketing strategy to target under-represented groups, and a more modern application and recruitment process.
The trial project will last for two months starting on Monday July 19.
