Cumbria Police have confirmed that the man is in his thirties and is from London.
Searches paused in the evening at around 11pm.
Partners from Cumbria Fire and Rescue, North West Ambulance Service, Mountain Rescue, the Coastguard and North West Underwater Dive team are currently assisting officers.
