Members of the public are being warned not to mix alcohol and swimming this week by a west Cumbrian Lifeboats team as the weather heats up.

St Bees RNLI have echoed the message of HM Coastguard in urging people to be wary of the water during the summer holidays.

A spokesperson for St Bees RNLI on Facebook said: "For many of us this is the first weekend of the summer holidays and the weather has been exceptionally hot.

"In this heat a cool refreshing dip will seem like a great idea, but please remember that the water in the sea, lakes and reservoirs is still very cold even in this heat, cold water shock can kill please #RespectTheWater.

"If you are going to enjoy a cold beer or two please keep out of the water as alcohol and swimming do not mix.

"Enjoy the sunny weather and please stay safe."

If you do get into difficulty, remember to float to live.

In an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
