IT was the year the Queen marked half a century on the throne, and visited Cumbria as part of a nationwide series of events.

Seems hard to believe that 2002 was 19 years ago now (and Her Majesty has long since passed the record to become our longest-reigning monarch ever).

We have had a dip in the picture archives to find this other selection of the comings and goings of Cumbrian life in 2002.

From taking a walk on the wild side with botanist Dr David Bellamy to proud Wigton dog-owners sponsoring a guide dog for the blind (and with that year’s bonniest baby added for good measure), we hope you enjoy a trip down memory lane.

We see The Queen passing through a guard of honour laid on by local scout groups at Carlisle’s Tullie House with Joanne Orr and Mike Mitchelson in 2002 during her Golden Jubilee year visit to the county.

W also meet ten-month-old Eve Routledge from Fleming Street, Maryport, with parents Gary Routledge and Fiona Martin after being presented with the trophy for winning the News & Star Bonny Babies 2002 competition.

In the world of cuisine, we see staff from McDonald's, Penrith, left, are also pictured after winning the Restaurant of the Year 2002.

We also see a real show of community spirit from Sixth form pupils at William Howard School, Brampton, who were presented with their Winter Warmth Team 2002-2003 certificates for visiting older people in Brampton during the winter months.

And in the world of sport, we see the people of the city and from beyond enjoying the fun day out that is Carlisle Race Course on Ladies Night at the height of summer in August, 2002.

And who can overlook firefighter Simon Stewart from Brampton, snapped training for the New York Marathon on November 3 2002?

For those featured, we're sure that today's gallery will bring back a lot of cherished memories of yesteryear.
