Tributes have poured in to a Carlisle teenager whose body was found in the River Eden after a multi-agency search operation.

Mohammad Abdul Hamid, known as Hamid, 16, of Barrock Street, Carlisle was identified by police yesterday.

Emergency services conducted a search of the river over the weekend when the North West Ambulance Service reported concern for his welfare after he entered the River Eden.

Hamid's school, Richard Rose Central Academy has now paid tribute to the teenager.

They said: "We will all miss Hamid who was a very popular and friendly student with considerable potential. Our thoughts and prayers are with Hamid's friends and family at this time."

The school will be open on multiple occasions this week to give students professional support as they come to terms with the tragedy.

The academy said: "If your child is affected by this incident and wants to speak to a counsellor, please do contact safeguarding@rrca.org.uk.

"Likewise, if as a parent you feel it would be helpful to talk to someone, please do let us know."
