Plans to create a lasting tribute to remember the effects of the coronavirus pandemic have been given the go-ahead.
Allerdale Council has approved the proposals for the ‘Nightingale’ memorial statue in Vulcans Park.
The scheme, put forward by Workington Town Council, will feature a sculpture that has been donated to the town by firm R.A.F Engineering Limited.
There will also be stones incorporated which local children are being asked to paint to reflect displays which appeared in parks during the pandemic.
Councillor Will Wilkinson, who is the town’s deputy mayor, first brought the idea forward and was pleased that the plans had been approved.
He said: “I’m over the moon it has finally been passed. Now it’s full steam ahead. I can’t wait.
“I hope R.A.F. Engineering get the recognition they deserve.
“People will have quiet reflection of the longevity of the pandemic.
“It isn’t over yet.”
Rafal Gibki, managing director at R.A.F Engineering Limited, said: “The whole team here at R.A.F Engineering are delighted to hear that the plans have been approved for the Covid-19 memorial monument at Vulcans Park.
“We can now really get into the full swing of production, and we are very excited to share our work with the local community.
“It's been a very hard time for both individuals and businesses dealing with the affects of the pandemic so having somewhere people can go and reflect is important and we are grateful we have been given the opportunity to give something back to the community.”
